This past week I held an event for the women of our church. I talk to my mother daily so she knew of the event. She keeps up with what her grown daughters are doing. She is interested in our lives. We talked about the program, what I would be teaching, and she told me she would be praying for me. I know she prays for me. What caught me off guard was a text I received from my sister right before our event started. At first glance, I thought my mother had taken a fall. All I saw were the words “found mom” and “beside her bed.” After that initial fright, I read the message closer and then my heart melted. It’s the best text message I’ve ever received.
I Found Mom…Praying for You
“I found mom kneeling beside her bed, hands clasped in prayer for you. So touching and powerful.” That’s the best text message, ever! I’ve written about my mom before. On my Mother’s Day post this year, I told you that her “superpower” is prayer. You can read that post HERE. This incident was confirmation! I am most fortunate to have a mother that prays for me. I am a grown woman and grandmother to boot, but I still need and appreciate the prayers of my mother. There is no one in this world who knows me better. She knows how and what to pray for me. And if she is anything like her own mother, her petition includes “but not my will, Lord, your will be done.”
More Like Mom
I said a little prayer that evening, asking God to make me more like my mother. I want to pray for others the way she prays for me. EVERYONE needs someone like this in their life! And those of us who believe in Jesus and the power of prayer are well equipped to be that person for someone. You don’t have to be a mother to pray. Get to know some of the people in your life who need prayer. Then take the time to pray. What a privilege to be found on our knees, hands clasped in prayer for someone who really needs it.
The Holy Spirit Intercedes for Us
Don’t be tempted to go down the pathway of self pity because you don’t have that person in your life. If you are a believer in Jesus, you have someone even better to pray for you. Romans 8:26-27 is a “text message” as proof.
“Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”
There you have it. The Spirit intercedes for us according to the will of God. What a beautiful and tender picture of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. I wish we all could remember that! We might face our difficult circumstances with a little more hope and confidence knowing that the Holy Spirit is praying on our behalf.
The Rest of the Story
And here is the rest of the story of my evening. The event went well. The women who attended learned some new things about God through His Word. God was glorified. We were totally unaware of the 70 mph winds and two tornado warnings that went out during our time together. My mother didn’t know about the winds and warnings, either, but the Holy Spirit did! There were at least two prayer warriors praying for us that evening! I learned about one in a text message and the other is a promise from Scripture.
